Perhaps one of the best ways to illustrate the building boom in Southern California is with photos of Pasadena. The photo above shows the vicinity of the intersection of Fair Oaks and Colorado in 1884, just three years after the Trussells settled in Sierra Madre. The view shows the very modest development that had occurred in Pasadena up to that time. The three larger buildings are the Pasadena Hotel, Barney Williams Store and the Los Angeles Hotel (L. to R.). The picture below shows the same intersection in 1890, just six years after the first photo. The view is from Fair Oaks looking east on Colorado. The building on the right is the same Pasadena Hotel.
